Specialty Family Foundation began collaborating with SHEILDS for Families in 2009. Each year we invest $100,000 in SHIELDS’ Heros & Sheros Youth Development Program aimed at early intervention and prevention among youth ages 6 to 18 at high risk of developing substance use disorders. The funding we provided helps connect the children of parents enrolled in SHIELDS’ substance use treatment services to a wide range of resources and skills to help stabilize their home and family environments, adjust to school, and prepare for college and adulthood.
Using a research-based community-ecosystems approach, the Heros & Sheros program addresses an array of integrated challenges at-risk youth face, including the impact of economic and cultural circumstances on substance use disorders. Our investment has helped the program provide comprehensive services to an estimated 240 children to date, with promising results. Because of its success, Heros and Sheros has been cited as a best practice program by the California Institute of Mental Health (CIMH).
